Artist Statement

In my painting, “The Boob Tube,” I draw inspiration from Shel Silverstein’s poem “Jimmy Jet and His TV Set” to explore our struggle with screen addiction.

The central figure, a whale-like creature with an antenna fluke, symbolizes the pervasive impact of technology, while its googly eyes reflect the disconnection caused by excessive screen time. This piece serves as a cautionary tale, inviting viewers to contemplate the implications of our digital lives.

With the use of vibrant colors and exaggerated shapes, I aim to highlight the absurdity of our screen obsession, provoking both humor and discomfort. The creature’s grotesque transformation mirrors our tendency to prioritize screens over genuine connections.

Ultimately, “The Boob Tube” encourages introspection about reclaiming our attention and redefining our relationship with technology. I hope to spark dialogue about finding joy and meaning beyond the glow of screens.
