Coming Home Artist Statement
Sarah Bing’s talent for the arts became apparent at a young age. Her affinity for painting was further developed and enhanced when she entered the Fine Arts studies program at the University of Calgary. This culminated in 2002 when she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with distinction.
Using her technical skills in shape, form, colour and space, Sarah’s fluid application of paint to canvas gives life to virtually any subject matter. With her unique style, she’s discovered a way for realism and abstraction to coexist, passionately intertwined on one canvas. Her work displays a depth and sense of excitement so unique, that it is impossible to turn away without experiencing considerable visual impact.
Past inspirations have come from her travels and time spent in large metropolitan centres, such as Toronto and New York. However, most of her present inspiration comes from the unexpected vibrancy of everyday life. Bing’s most recent works are inspired by her inner sense of calm and self-love that she has been nurturing through daily meditation.
In November 2010, Sarah was awarded a prestigious commission from the Calgary Bar Association. This piece now graces the 52-foot back wall of the Ceremonial Courtroom in Calgary’s Court Centre.
“Coming home” is a body of work that encapsulates the essence of What stillness can bring to our souls. The notion of being in nature automatically removes us from the chaos and noise of our aily lives and gives us the opportunity to breathe and get real with ourselves. Conscious awareness, mindful breathing and active presence allow us to open our hearts and minds and ground us in a way that is unattainable when we are distracted.
Merging abstract and expressionistic styles, the artist encourages the viewer to experience the fluidity against the structure in the elements of each piece in this collection. The intentional juxtaposition between the organized configuration of the landscapes and the unpredictable flexibilityof the abstract pieces affords the mind and the heart the opening
to speak to one another. This creates the opportunity for the viewer to explore the adventure of emptiness - the only place from which we can truly look inward without disruption.
With similar techniques and colors, this uniform collection offers the individual’s personal insight to guide their experience while viewing the art. Seeing shadows, windows, drips, flowing water. And solid structures are intended to give the viewer permission to guide themselves through the emotions they are feeling while interpreting the collection in their own way. Come home, connect with yourself in a dreamlike state and awaken to your consciousness.
